Union Pacific

100 Ton quad hoppers in N Scale

Union Pacific rosters more 100 T quad hoppers than any other car style. In the early 1980s the Union Pacific Railroad Company had the largest fleet of twelve panel quad hoppers in the nation. It soon gained more quad hoppers through the merger with Missouri Pacific. Later it gained even more quad hoppers through the Chicago and North Western and the Rio Grande mergers. Union Pacific has also added twelve panel quads in CTRN and CHTT reporting marks since the UP reporting marks are full. Today Union Pacific still has the largest fleet of quad hoppers in the nation.

Utah Railway

There must have been a mishap on the Utah Railway. These Bethlehem 100T quad hoppers are possibly second hand Mo-Pac cars. After being wrecked the Utah Railway acquired these two cars and painted and numbered the cars 4000 and 4001.

N Scale WM 90000

“Built in September of 1963 by Bethlehem Steel and labeled corrosion test car this is the only 100 ton quad hopper owned by Western Maryland. As far as I know the WM was doing corrosion test for its own interest. However since the rotary dumper at Port Covington (Baltimore) could only handle up to 70 ton cars the quad’s service was limited. Thus it was often seen in service to the mines around Bayard, WV and then taken up to the power plant (Vepco Power) since they could handle the big car.” This car was re-painted into the Chessie scheme in September of 83.
